NYC - HOUSING

Arch: NYC Housing

Cornell/S2/Y3 - Housing Studio

This is a proposal for a housing complex developed in collaboration with Troy Bacchus. The building hides from its shadow and delicately cuts itself around its neighboring buildings to avoid stealing their afternoon winter sunlight. The result is a building that hovers above its base on concrete columns touching the ground in a few points to make sure that the site and surrounding buildings are minimally affected by the building’s shadow.

The project questions existing zoning laws by rezoning its boundary conditions with light and shadow and then building inside that new volume.
Each volume attempts to cast as little of a shadow as possible on its neighbors. These iterative studies led us to our final design.

The units follow a pattern across 3 widths and 3 depths and are all placed in the volume of the building with units growing on one side of the stairs and shrinking on the other as the stairs angle their way through the building and towards the South (sunny) side of the building.
